1 Legged Seagulls

Posted in Uncategorized on January 30, 2010 by benfeldott

If you have sent anytime by the ocean you may have seen this phenomenon, lots of 1 legged seagulls.    When you first notice it can be disconcerting…what could cause all of these poor seagulls to be “1 legged”….mutation, predators, ?????.

Before you jump to any conclusions, watch closely…hang around for a while…and you will notice the magical appearance of the missing leg!  Seagulls it seem have taken to tucking a leg up into their bodies as a way of resting that leg (if you ask me standing on one leg was never restful, but then again I am not a seagull!) . The result is the uncanny appearence of being “1 legged”.  It seems…things are not always as they seem.

When we talk about how our lives are “marked”,  things are not always as they seem either. We have a tendency to rush to blame the sorrowful stuff  in our lives on the obvious culprits…but take a closer look  and a different story appears.   Lifes “marks” seem to come in 3 varieties…I call them Birthmarks, Scars, and Tattoo’s. Birthmarks are the things we are born into, Scars are the things others have done to us, and Tattoo’s are the things we have done to ourselves. Knowing the true culprit is the beginning to overcoming in Christ.

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Hippos on the run!

I was thinking about the “rut” we often find ourselves in, how our past is repeated as if it has some sick control over my life. We live in prisons to our past – truth is we have a hard time envisioning anything different for our selves than the reality we have experienced time and again.

That got me thinking about Nikica, a 4000 pound hippo in a zoo in Montenegro. Hippos are the 3rd largest land animals in the world (Elephants and Rhino’s being larger…cause I know you were wonderin’ !) and one of the most dangerous (Have you seen those teeth) but they are hardly an escape risk.  You see if your a hippo in a zoo, your stuck, you can dream about sneaking out or jumping the fence but that is all it is…a dream!

That is what I love about the story of Nikica….she escaped!  Yep, a 4000 pd hippo got away. It seems the zoo flooded so badly that the water in Nikica’s pen rose high enough to allow her to swim out (Picture below) to freedom.

In a way we are all hippo’s who can’t jump the fence or sneak away and may be thinking, “I’m stuck!” That is precisely the time we need to be flooded with  God’s grace that brings us to freedom and a new way of living.

We find the power of Phil 4:13 (I can do all things through him who strengthens me) is not in the 1st word but in the 7th.

Here is some  video of Nikica on the run!

The effect of Fake

Posted in Culture, Spiritual Maturity & Discipleship, Uncategorized on January 16, 2010 by benfeldott

In my latest message series I am talking about “Self Image” and specifically this week about the effect of what others say/think about us can have.  We have all been painted with the “broad brush” before – the problem is not in what others say, it is when we wear the comments on our heart and sleeve.

Can you remember the comments from your childhood or teen years that still stick like and unwelcome guest you cannot get rid of? I got thinking about these words of   criticism that become self-fulfilling prophecies and then I came across this study.

In a recent experiment being published in the psychological SCience Journal a group of people were asked to wear fake (counterfeit) glasses and then given a test of honesty with a dose of temptation. Those wearing the counterfeit sunglasses were more likely to lie (30% to 71%) to lie.  hard to believe just wearing fake glasses could cause that kind of behavior. It seems that simply wearing something fake can lead to “faking it”.

Here is my thought for this series – how often have the counterfeit criticism of culture led a to counterfeit behavior in our lives. Think about it, a peer a neighbor a teacher a parent says “You are _______’ and we go on living or fearing that it is true. We are wearing the counterfeit sunglasses and end up living it out in a sick self-fulfilling prophecy.

So as y ou think about this study think about what God has to say about each of us….

Psalms 23:7 says “For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” and Romans 12:2 says it this way…… “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Hati Relief

One newspaper headline declared of the destruction in Haiti “Biblical Proportions” and from the images and reports that description seems apt.  All of this gives the Christians community to respond in “Biblical Proportion” as well!

We are doing that in concert with our Missionary Partners (Lanes and Franklins) who are serving on the island of Hispaniola (Haiti/Dominican Republic). One of the great blessings of a robust missions programs such as the BBFI has is the chance to respond quickly and personally to need and then to continue that relief with lasting spiritual assistance – long after others have left.

Excellence is not $$$

Posted in Uncategorized on May 21, 2009 by benfeldott

To continue with some thoughts on excellence this is a needful reminder…

Excellence is not $

There is a common mis-perception that excellence is the equivalent of expense, that the only way to display excellence is to spend the big bucks!  Truth is – this is  cop out!

Sure there is the reality of money and cost in any endeavor – but too often our lack of excellence is pinned on a lack of loot ($$$). The reality is that excellence is the product of effort not expense.

When someone cares about a product, a program, a message, or a business, they invest effort and whatever resources they have available and the result is often excellence.

Take the simple example of the “Front lawn”… a while back while in the car with a couple of my oldest children we passed a perfectly manicured lawn. My kids commented – “Dad look at their lawn, how come our lawn doesn’t look like that?  I responded “They have people that do their lawn” (Landscapers $$$)!

Truth is – that was a convenient excuse that ignored the reality of plenty of people with “excellent lawns” whose primary expenditure is “effort” (because they care!).  No matter the size of your endeavor, ministry, or work, excellence is within reach if you are willing to spend EFFORT!

If what we are doing is really for the Lord….can we justify anything less. So take a look around at the “lawn” you are growing at work in ministry, at home….is it excellent!?
